Several clinical studies were conducted in order to evaluate the impact of silicic acid supplementation on hair, nails and skin health condition. Collasil® OSA: an optimal silicon for connective tissue health benefits

Silicon is present in all body tissues, with the highest concentrations in bone and other connective tissue, including skin, hair, nails and arteries1. In animals, silicon deficit can be bound to severe bone and joint diseases, and more specifically in human body, silicon deprivation has been connected to many degenerative diseases and tissue ageing processes2, 3.

In human body, the bioavailability of silicon provided by food is weak and disminished with age and the decline of oestrogenic permeation4.

Experimental design of the clinical studies on Collasil® OSA

Clinical study on hair5 

The clinical study was conducted from October 2009 until May 2010. 34 volunteers (women of 17-57 years old) were given an oral supplementation of silicon (Collasil® OSA) for 5 months.

They received a daily dose of 600 mg of Collasil® OSA divided in two intakes of 300 mg at least two hours after meals for a better absorption of the orthosilic acid form OSA, accordingly to the recommended dose1.

The subjects were asked to answer a questionnaire during the study on their perception of the following subjective parameters: brushing, softness, brightness, and quality. Measurements were made to evaluate the average rate of hair growth and protein loss for each patient.

Clinical studies on overall ageing prevention of hair, nails and skin6, 7

A first study6 published in 1993 included 47 women between 30 and 64 years old who were supplemented with 10 ml colloidal silicic acid once a day for 3 months.

The objective of the study was to measure the improvement in the thickness and turgor of the skin, wrinkles and also the condition of the hair and nails.

Later on, A. Barel et al.7 evaluated the degree of brittleness of hair and nails over 48 women aged 40 to 65, as well as the roughness of their skin surface.

The subjects were treated twice a day with an oral supplementation with 10 mg of silicon in the form OSA, or a placebo, for 5 months between autumn 2003 and spring 2004.

 

Proven benefits of Collasil® OSA on skin, hair and nails
